Rustic Handmade Antique French Oyster or Snail Gathering Basket

Purchased from a Brocante in Brittany France.

This 'basket' an oystering basket. It is superbly handmade and truly charming by its rustic simplicity.

To my mind, in spite of its rustic utilitarian purpose it has grace, even elegance.

We see this trait in a variety of the old utilitarian objects of this region.

This beautifully made shellfish (possibly for snails as well) gathering basket comes from the Brittany region of France.

This coast is famous for its wonderful shellfish and this basket would have been used by local gatherers a long time ago...perhaps in about the 1930-40s or so we think.

These old baskets have all but disappeared now, having been replaced by factory-made clones.

This is a rare survivor of the original handmade type.

Made of wire this basket is light in weight but strong.

This basket is in Truly Excellent Vintage Condition

This oyster basket measures approx. 22 inches lengthwise, 13.5 inches across at the handle and 11.5 inches high.
